  1. Ask you’re self what do I want to get out of karate.

I have just had the privilege of attended another of Vince Morris seminars on kissaki kai (I am the one in the blue shirt at the back with no head) and again more things make sense. I have also just attended a karate competition and after talking with some very experienced people on the merits kissaki kai and all other types of karate the following things seem obvious. If your after a doing karate as a form of fitness or as a combat based sport, or as a real form of self defence then that’s your personal choice, as long as you know what you want to get out of it.

    So what would I recommend?

My choice would be to do both, but to know exactly what you can gain from each. You could just do kissaki kai and you would be trained to a high level in protecting yourself in any situation with realistic techniques but if you also trained in a fighting based sport, no matter what it is and attend competitions, then you will also have the confidence to face real opponents, who are trying to attack you with multiple techniques. However if all you want to do is karate as a sport I would also recommend attending any kissaki kai seminar as it will give you a greater understanding of kata which will improve it for competitions.

Thanks to Gerry, Vince and his wife Eva for giving up their time to help us gain more understanding.
